ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Farai Engelbrecht (Samurai Farai) is a South African visual artist, curator, and cultural entrepreneur based in Johannesburg.
Moulded by the cultural dynamics of Southern Africa and informed by his dual Zimbabwean and Afrikaans heritage, his practice offers a distinct Afrocentric perspective rooted in lived experience. Working across fine art, objects, and wearable forms, Engelbrecht’s work explores identity, memory, and the psychological and spiritual dimensions that exist beneath the surface of everyday life.
His bold, cubist-influenced visual language is defined by strong colour, emotional depth, and figurative compositions that hold multiple states at once. Rather than imagined characters, his portraits reflect the shared complexity of human experience, mirroring the tensions, vulnerabilities, and resilience found within society.
Beyond his studio practice, Engelbrecht operates as a curator, gallery founder, and art dealer, actively shaping platforms for contemporary African expression. His work has been exhibited internationally, and he has collaborated with major brands including Diesel, Chery, and Butan.
Engelbrecht received a full bursary to study Printmaking at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town, where he developed the artistic identity and visual philosophy known as Samurai Farai.
