Masks of Modernity Samurai Farai’s Debut Solo Exhibition
Masks of Modernity unfolded across two cities (Johannesburg and Cape Town), each serving as a distinct volume in Samurai Farai’s personal and artistic journey. Together, the two volumes form a powerful meditation on the tensions between past and future, tradition and innovation. Masks of Modernity challenges fixed notions of “Africanness,” inviting viewers to engage with identity as fluid, complex, and continuously evolving. Download Collector Catalogue
VOLUME I
Held in Johannesburg, the exhibition offered an introspective exploration of African identity through the lens of Farai’s Zimbabwean and Afrikaans heritage. Centred on themes of hybridity and self-definition, the exhibition combined painting, sculpture, and ceramics to honour ancestral traditions while reflecting on the complexities of identity in a globalised world.
VOLUME II
Presented in Cape Town, expanded the narrative through maximalism and radical self-expression. Farai deepened his visual language with bold murals, new paintings, and sculptural works (all layered with symbolism) to create an immersive, emotionally charged environment.
